Crumlin — From WWII Air Force Base to Semi-Rural London Living

A semi-rural east London community annexed in 1993, built on the site of RCAF Station Crumlin — a real Second World War flight training base whose veteran-built homes still stand.

Crumlin was a separate community east of London, on the former border of London Township and West Nissouri Township, until the city annexed it in 1993. Its most significant history is aviation: RCAF Station Crumlin opened June 24, 1940, home to No. 3 Elementary Flying Training School and No. 4 Air Observer School under the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. The station stayed open after the war, eventually becoming RCAF Station London. Many of Crumlin's homes were sold to returning veterans after the Second World War, each on at least an acre lot with a prefabricated structure — some of that character remains today. Crumlin is now a semi-rural neighbourhood, offering country-living quiet with easy access to Highway 401, London International Airport, and the rest of the city.
