Hyde Park — Older Than the City of London Itself
Settled in 1818, before the City of London existed, and now a major northwest shopping district with a Walmart Supercentre, Lowe's and Canadian Tire.
Hyde Park's first settlers arrived in 1818 from Cumberland, England, making this hamlet older than the City of London itself. Known as "Hyde Park Corner" until 1963, the community grew up around the intersection of Gainsborough Road and Hyde Park Road, starting with merchant William Lamely, followed by Elijah Lampard and John Reeve. Hyde Park School was built around 1840, and a post office opened on New Year's Day, 1859. The area remained largely rural, part of London Township, until it joined the City of London on January 1, 1993, after which Hyde Park saw a major construction boom of both residential and commercial development. The crossroads of Hyde Park Road and Fanshawe Park Road is now one of northwest London's busiest shopping areas, home to a Walmart Supercentre, Lowe's, Canadian Tire, an LCBO and a ServiceOntario centre.
