Hyde Park — Older Than the City of London Itself
Settled in 1818, before the City of London existed — now a major northwest shopping district anchored by Loblaws, SilverCity, and The Keg.
Hyde Park's first settlers arrived in 1818 from Cumberland, England, making this hamlet older than the City of London itself. Known as "Hyde Park Corner" until 1963, the community grew up around the intersection of Gainsborough Road and Hyde Park Road, starting with merchant William Lamely, followed by Elijah Lampard and John Reeve. Hyde Park School was built around 1840, and a post office opened on New Year's Day, 1859. The area remained largely rural until London annexed it in 1992, after which Hyde Park saw a major construction boom of both residential and commercial development. The crossroads of Hyde Park Road and Fanshawe Park Road is now one of northwest London's busiest shopping areas, home to Loblaws, GoodLife Fitness, Indigo, SilverCity London Cinemas, The Keg Steakhouse & Bar, the LCBO, The Beer Store, and Best Buy.
