Old East Village — London's Most Historic Arts & Culture District

Incorporated in 1874 as its own town, Old East Village is home to Banting House — the birthplace of insulin — plus Aeolian Hall, the Palace Theatre, and an Ontario Heritage Conservation District designation.

Old East Village was originally incorporated in 1874 as the separate town of London East, with deep industrial and railroad roots — Murray Anderson, who later became London's first mayor, opened the Globe Foundry Ironworks at Adelaide and Dundas in 1856. The neighbourhood was designated an Ontario Heritage Conservation District in 2006. Its best-known landmark, Aeolian Hall at 795-797 Dundas Street, was originally built in 1883-1884 as East London's Town Hall, complete with a council chamber and a fire station on the ground floor, before being converted into a concert venue in 1969. Old East Village is also home to Banting House — the birthplace of insulin, now a museum — along with the Palace Theatre and Clayworx Ceramic Arts Learning Centre. The Western Fair Farmers and Artisans Market runs every Saturday and is a major social and economic anchor for the neighbourhood.
