Delaware — Founded 1796 on the Banks of the Thames

Delaware was first founded in 1796, straddling the Thames River about 10 kilometres west of London within Middlesex County — making it one of the older settlements in the region, predating London itself. During the War of 1812, Delaware was the objective of an American raid into Upper Canada, which led to the Battle of Longwoods on March 4, 1814, fought roughly 24 kilometres away. The Thames River running through the community carries deep history of its own: known as "La Tranche" ("The Trench") to French fur traders, and "Deshkan Ziibi" ("Antler River") in Anishnaabemowin, the language of the Anishnaabe peoples who, together with the Neutrals, have lived along it for thousands of years. Delaware is now part of the Municipality of Middlesex Centre, formed in 1998 through the amalgamation of Delaware, Lobo, and London Townships.
