Fanshawe — Home to London's Largest Conservation Area
A northeast London neighbourhood defined by the Fanshawe Conservation Area — the 1950s Fanshawe Dam, kilometres of trails, and the Fanshawe Pioneer Village open-air museum.
Fanshawe takes its identity from the Fanshawe Conservation Area, accessible from its main entrance at 1424 Clarke Road in northeast London. The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority, created in 1947, built the Fanshawe Dam here in the 1950s to control flooding along the Thames River — the reservoir it created is now the centrepiece of the conservation area's trails and recreation space. Within the conservation area sits Fanshawe Pioneer Village, an open-air museum established in 1959 that uses historical re-enactments to tell the story of rural communities in the former townships of Westminster, London, North Dorchester, Delaware, West Nissouri, and Lobo from 1820 to 1920, plus the founding of London itself up to 1840. The village is owned and operated by the London and Middlesex Heritage Museum, a not-for-profit charity.
