Why People Choose Masonville

Masonville has been a crossroads stop since settlers began receiving land grants here in the early 1800s. The community started as a small village known as McMartin's Corner, and by the late 19th century, factories including the Bryan Brush and Broom Company had sprung up at the intersection, alongside John Hewings' well-known local boot-and-shoe operation. The nearby crossing of Richmond Street and Fanshawe Park Road was once nicknamed "Calamity Corners" after two catastrophic accidents in its early years. London annexed the village of Masonville in 1961, when the area was still mostly rural farmland; the housing seen today — large single-family homes, townhomes, small apartment buildings, and student housing — was developed through the 1980s. Masonville Place, the enclosed regional mall at the southeast corner of Fanshawe Park Road and Richmond Street, opened January 2, 1985 as London's third multi-level shopping centre (after Westmount Mall and White Oaks Mall), originally anchored by Eaton's, Loblaws, and Sears Canada. It now holds more than 130 stores, several restaurants, and a food court.
