Mount Brydges — A Historic Railway Village With Its Own Downtown
Settled in 1829 and named for the railway men who built it, Mount Brydges is Strathroy-Caradoc's second historic centre — tree-lined streets and a 13-building heritage walking tour.
Mount Brydges traces back to a pioneer settlement in 1829, growing further with the arrival of the Great Western Railway in 1853. The village takes its name from surveyor Colonel Roswell Mount and Great Western Railway general manager Charles J. Brydges, and it became a major shipping point for surrounding farms before being formally declared a village in 1906. Today Mount Brydges is one of Strathroy-Caradoc's two largest communities (alongside Strathroy itself), and its railway-and-farm-shipping history gives the municipality a genuine second historic centre. The village retains friendly merchants, tree-lined streets, and charming architecture, including 1880s buildings downtown that once housed the post office and general store. A Heritage Walking Tour covers 13 historic buildings in the village.
