One of London's newest, most upscale neighbourhoods, backing onto the 400-acre Sunningdale Golf & Country Club and the Medway Valley heritage forest.
Sunningdale takes its name from the golf course that borders its north side — the private Sunningdale Golf & Country Club, roughly 400 acres at 465 Sunningdale Road West. J. Gordon Thompson acquired the land, then a 100-acre farm north of London's old city boundary, in 1932; a 9-hole course designed by the celebrated architect Stanley Thompson opened within two years, and a full 18-hole layout followed the year after. Today the club's 400 acres hold two 18-hole championship courses designed by Stanley Thompson and Clinton "Robbie" Robinson — two of the most respected names in Canadian golf-course design. The residential neighbourhood that grew up around the course is one of London's newest and most upscale, still expanding with new building projects. Plane Tree Park sits at its centre with soccer fields and a playground, while McGarrell Walk and Pinnacle Park serve the neighbourhood's other end. The Medway Valley — a heritage forest along Medway Creek, with extensive walking trails — is one of London's significant natural areas and a defining feature of life in Sunningdale.
