Westminster — South London Homes Between Commissioners Road and the 401
A mostly single-detached 1960s-70s neighbourhood east of Wellington Road, with roots as its own separate town before amalgamating into London in 1993.
Westminster sits immediately north of Highway 401 and east of Wellington Road, roughly bounded by Commissioners Road to the north. The area was first settled in 1817, though the neighbourhood as it exists today developed much later — expanding through the 1940s and 50s, becoming part of London through the 1961 annexation, and seeing most of its substantial development in the 1970s. Housing is mainly single-detached homes built in the late 1960s and 1970s, with some duplexes and a number of townhouse complexes. Westminster has a distinct regional history: the Town of Westminster was formally established in 1988 from the former Westminster Township, specifically as an attempt to prevent annexation by London — it didn't work for long, and the whole area was amalgamated into the city in 1993.
